My mom said, "we made it during the depression because we lived on a farm; we had cows for milk; we had chickens for eggs; we grew wheat for bread and pancakes." They were very poor during the depression, lived in Oklahoma on Route 66, and fed every traveler that stopped on their way to California in their battle to survive.
