Off Kilter Fishing
Off–Kil·ter, adjective : away from the usual, a bit askew, far-out, curious, eccentric. This channel will focus on Sheepshead fishing techniques that are not what you have ever seen advertised as “How To Catch Sheepshead”. I prefer to use heavier gear so that I do not lose big Sheepshead or Black Drum to structure and I can get my tackle back if I get snagged. I have found that Sheepshead tend not to be leader shy, and I can still feel the bite by keeping my thumb on the line while using modern lightweight conventional reels and jigging rods. I use large chunky baits that sheepshead cannot resist such as live sea urchins, and live mud crabs. I mostly fish my baits on the bottom with a two hook set up. I like to allow the fish to get happy with chomping on the baits, feed for 3 to 5 seconds and then I set the hook hard. Come along for the ride as I also target Red Drum, Flounder, Tautog and pretty much anything else that swims. It’s called allowed.
